Jeff's Story

“This powerful testimony follows a father’s journey through childhood trauma and addiction, to a place of complete surrender, when God began to heal his fractured family and rewrite his future.”

Built for the Long Haul: Finding Healing in the Midst of Brokenness

Some stories don't start clean. They begin in chaos, winding through layers of pain and messy realities. For many of us, the wounds we carry from childhood aren’t easily left behind; instead, they follow us, echoing into our marriages, our parenting, and our relationship with God.But as we see in the powerful story of a life transformed, no story is too broken for God to rewrite.

The Echoes of a Painful Past

Growing up, the speaker deeply loved and looked up to his father, a 1960s sheriff's deputy. He cherished the moments they shared—driving down Jackson Highway or watching him at the YMCA. Yet, alongside those sweet memories lived terrifying ones. A childhood marked by severe beatings and volatile domestic rage meant that fear became a constant roommate.Even after finding faith at the age of 14 during an altar call at Warehouse Ministries in Sacramento, the deeply rooted pain didn't just vanish.

The Cycle of Escape

Despite swearing he would never become like his father, unprocessed pain has a way of leaking out. While he never physically harmed his children, he disappeared in other ways—seeking escape through alcohol and substances. Eventually, the weight of addiction brought everything to a breaking point. Relationships fractured, his marriage was on its last string, and his children felt like ghosts. He was trapped in a cycle of shame.

A Lifeline of Grace

When he couldn't even love himself, grace stepped in through his daughter, Elizabeth. She bought him a plane ticket and invited him to come get sober. He spent three months in Utah, riding his daughter's bicycle to underground AA meetings, completely focused on recovery. The true turning point, however, came at a lone oak tree sitting on a grassy knoll back home. Ten years prior, he had watched that very tree burn in a grass fire. Yet, looking at it again, it stood scorched but alive, thriving and green. It was there, under the canopy of that resilient oak, that he brought a wooden cross and a letter to his father. He laid them down, burying every ounce of grief, regret, and brokenness he had carried since he was five years old. God met him in that place of surrender.

Restoration One Step at a Time

Healing didn't happen overnight, but God faithfully began opening doors to restore what had been broken. A broken-down car became the unexpected bridge to reconnect with his daughter, Faith, who had long refused to speak to him. In that quiet moment by the side of the road, tears were shed, and hearts began to heal. Today, life is walked out one surrendered step at a time. He is a dad, a grandfather ("Pow-Pow"), and a living testament to the truth that no one is too far gone. Forgiveness didn't change his past, but it completely transformed his future. Now, his daily mission is simple: to give his kids and grandkids the safe, loving moments he never got to experience himself.

Update:

Jeff recently went home to be with Jesus surrounded by loved ones. His story of redemption remains with us as part of his legacy in the District Church family.
